TODAY'S SMILE
THIS WEEK
Back by popular demand! Dr. Greg Davis, Principal Technologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), will join us to discuss the most recent and exciting developments related to the James Webb Space Telescope. The largest optical telescope in space has been "out there" since Christmas 2021 and is pushing the boundaries of human knowledge even further. Also scheduled:  a Craft Talk from Danielle Cortes.

AT OUR LAST MEETING
Last week, Kirstie Hettinga, Associate Professor of Communications at Cal Lutheran University, discussed what happens when misinformation is designed to look like news, and how we as consumers can help prevent its spread. She included examples of the "pandemic of misinformation" (also know as an "infodemic") we all are exposed to these days, and urged us to rely on credible sources for accurate news, not Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets.

Also last week, we enjoyed a Craft Talk from Shawna Morris, who told us she is the middle of five sisters, and was raised in (and by) a Kansas Amish farming community. She graduated from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana and subsequently received her MPA from the University of Kansas. Prior to becoming CEO of Casa Pacifica 2-1/2 years ago, she worked at The Menninger Clinic and the Phoenix Houses of California and Texas. As part of her talk, Shawna showed us a quilt that she said helps her explain her life's journey.
CLUB NEWS
BON VOYAGE, MAX
Max and Donna are leaving soon for a month-long, round-trip cruise through the Panama Canal to Florida. Along the way, they will be dropping off a suitcase full of medical supplies at a port in Mexico, through a program called "Not Just Tourists". Established in 2018 by Carl and Tara Eaton, Not Just Tourists is a non-political, non-religious, 100% volunteer organization focused on providing critically needed medical supplies to poorly funded clinics around the globe. You can learn more about the organization here.
THANKS, IRA!

2/1  Christy Teranishi-Martinez Ph.D
The pursuit of goals is correlated with greater well-being. However, as we get older, we often reflect on what really matters in life. In the longest running study on happiness, Waldinger found the greatest predictor of happiness is our relationships. In a search for the meaning of happiness, Associate Professor of Psychology at CSUCI, Christy Teranishi-Martinez, will share the lessons learned from her travels through Japan, the U.S., and Peru. Christy reconnected with past mentors to hear about their journey attaining their own life goals---while mentoring her in her educational/career aspirations during a six-month sabbatical.

2/8 Maureen McGuire
No industry has a more profound impact on Ventura County's landscape and quality of life than agriculture. Farm Bureau of Ventura County CEO Maureen McGuire will give us a review of the history of Ventura County farming, the Farm Bureau, and discuss what needs to happen to keep farming thriving despite the challenges of drought, climate change, the housing crisis, and more.
