Dr. Anabel Ford, American archaeologist specializing in the study of Mesoamerica will present "Values in Forest Gardens: Living Museums and School Gardens of El Pilar" (an ancient city she discovered). It is no accident that the dominant Maya forest plants are all useful. Generations over millennia crafted a landscape to satisfy the necessities of life. We are reawakening inherent connections to the forest gardens based on the living museum at the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Maya Flora and Fauna of Belize and Guatemala. Today, Maya forest gardeners’ intimate knowledge of their landscape is a model of a sustainable co-creative process to mitigate climate changes, reduce temperature, maintain biodiversity, conserve water, enhance soil fertility, reduce erosion, care for people and provide inspiration all over our planet.
At our last meeting, Brad Lepper, Archaeology Curator for the Ohio History Connection in Columbus, told us about The Great Serpent Mound, a 1,348-foot-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound in Adams County, Ohio. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the US Department of the Interior. The Serpent Mound of Ohio was first reported in their historic volume Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley, published in 1848 by the newly founded Smithsonian Museum. The mound is the largest serpent effigy on earth.
4/7 Clyde Prestowitz Among other roles, Clyde Prestowitz has been a businessman, government official and negotiator in Asia and will be speaking about the struggle between the U.S. and China for global leadership that will define the 21st century. Communist China is the most powerful challenge the United States has ever faced with the possible exception of its own Civil War. China and the United States are exact opposites. China is authoritarian without freedom of speech or thought and without a rule of law. The U.S. is a democracy built upon the rights of free speech, rule of law, and due process. China has become so economically powerful, it threatens the U.S. which has misunderstood China for a very long time. Clyde will also discuss what we ought to be doing about China as the leader of the free world.
