TODAY'S SMILE
THIS WEEK
This week:  " 'Of Course, I'm an Organ Donor'—Unraveling the Mystery & Power of Organ Donation". Prior to teaching Sociology of Death & Dying at California Lutheran University, Heather Anderson was a Family Care Coordinator and Public Education Coordinator for Sierra Donor Services (SDS), a nonprofit organ, eye and tissue transplant donor network in Northern California and Nevada. The agency, committed to saving and improving lives through donation and transplantation, supports donation-potential donor families in their time of loss, provides care for them through the donation process and coordinates the recovery of organs and tissues for transplant. "Of Course, I'm an Organ Donor" provides an overview of organ donation, brain death and cardiac death, common myths and misconceptions about organ donation, the experience of serving as a Family Care Coordinator; and the power of the donor, donor family and recipient through the donation process. Stories from the field will also be shared.

AT OUR LAST MEETING
Our original speaker had to cancel last week, but ace Program Chair Pat was able to secure a replacement on very short notice. Thanks to Vivien Minton, Marketing Director for Food Share Ventura County, for stepping in to give us an update on that very worthy organization. Vivien told us she joined Food Share two weeks before the Covid crisis began, and she described some of the dramatic changes that resulted from the pandemic, including a huge increase in the amount of food they needed to purchase. Location was also a problem—their original site in Santa Paula quickly proved inadequate, and was replaced by the current 36,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Oxnard.

Vivien also showed us Food Share's latest video, which you can watch here:  Food Share Video

A RYLA MAILING PARTY
Ronda forwards this report on the recent RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) mailing party:

"We did it! It took about 2 hours for ten people to assemble 140+ packages filled with a RYLA swag. I created the shipping labels in advance and pre-staged everything so the process went smoothly. Packaging was followed by an endless variety of homemade gourmet pizzas and a decadent dessert, compliments of culinary student Mark. We're ready for the next volunteer (and feasting) opportunity! Thanks to Kathy Long, Laurie Bennett, Lyda & Tim Sprinkles, Lorraine Warshaw, Jay & Joni Berger and new members Mary Lingua and Megan Cooper—we made a great team!"

5/19  J. Allan Danelek
Was the first UFO “flap” in modern times really evidence of extraterrestrials or could it have been an example of an early but hidden man made technology? Author and researcher J. Allan Danelek looks at the issue in his book The Great Airship of 1897 and demonstrates how it might well have been evidence of both human ingenuity and mysterious tragedy being played out for a national audience.  His book, along with his many other works and various paranormal and spiritual writings can be found at www.ourcuriousworld.com and www.quest4spirit.org.
