TODAY'S SMILE
THIS WEEK
Since spring of 2019, Jackie Rose has been the Director of Animal Services for Ventura County. She will give us an overview of the wonderful work being done at VC Animal Services. From taking in a variety of animals—not just dogs and cats—at the shelter, to helping re-home pets that owners need to find new homes for, shelter pets being cared for temporarily by foster parents to pets the public have found and are caring for them in their home, VC Animal Services is involved with the welfare of all critters.

Also this week, we'll be welcoming back Past President Roberto, who has generously volunteered to be our interim leader until President-Elect Laurie takes over in July. Thanks, Roberto!

AT OUR LAST MEETING
You can't ask for change if you aren't willing to change yourself. That's the message Mike Wing gave us last week in explaining why he founded Unity to Spark Change in June 2020. Its goal is to find ways to bring different community members of different financial and ethnic backgrounds together as one to improve community relations during such a divided time. Mike urged us to identify personal bias, a crucial first step in growing community relations by self reflection.

Since its founding, the organization has worked closely with law enforcement (such as the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff's Association) on projects to benefit the community, beginning with a Drive-Through Trick or Treat event for Halloween 2020 and a November 2020 Drive-Through Toy Drive. It has also set up mobile Covid vaccination clinics, and has established a Covid Relief Fund that includes an Amazon Wish List (bottles, diapers, books, groceries, gift cards, etc.) and a Facebook donation site that allows community members to donate money toward paying bills for vetted struggling families.

If you are interested in helping, you can reach Mike at Mike@unitytosparkchange.com, or visit the Unity to Spark Change website at https://unitytosparkchange.com/

FUTURE PROGRAMS
NOTE:  All speakers will be in person at our live meetings unless otherwise indicated.

4/13 Keith Freitas
The County of Ventura Department of Airports owns and manages Camarillo Airport and Oxnard Airport. Together these airports provide vital connections to the national airspace system and are the home airport(s) to many businesses and individual aircraft owners.  The new Director of Airports, Keith Frietas, will tell us what's happening at Camarillo and Oxnard Airports.

4/20 Sheriff Bill Ayub
Law enforcement services for the City of Camarillo have been provided on a contract basis by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office since the city’s incorporation in 1964.  For this week's meeting, Sheriff Bill Ayub will give us a Public Safety Update.

4/27 Keith Taylor
Chief Deputy Assessor, Keith Taylor will be speaking about Proposition 19  - The Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families, and Victims of Wildfire or Natural Disasters Act. This new law (passed in 2020) drastically changed the way parents can transfer their principal residence to their children and the tax implications associated with that transfer. It also changed the way people over 55 years old can transfer their Prop 13 base assessment to replacement properties.

5/4 Kat Whitehouse
Life & Death on the Dunes. Kat Whitehouse, biologist with Ventura Audubon, will present the past, present and future of Ventura Audubon's Shorebird Recovery program. This program focuses on protecting nesting western snowy plovers and California least terns on Hollywood and Ormond Beaches in Ventura County. Both species are federally listed as either endangered or threatened and they nest on our busy recreational beaches each summer. The program utilizes science, habitat protection and public outreach to help these sensitive species.

5/11 4-Way Essay Contest
Come hear the best-of-the-best of local students that wrote essays about the code of ethics adopted by Rotary in 1943, now known as The 4-Way Test.  Our annual contest winners will share their personal experiences with truth, fairness, good will and benefits for everyone.

Love our Camarillo Library! Tim Furgal, Head of Adult Services, and Nicole Valdivia, Coordinator of the Russell Fischer Business Collection at our wonderful Camarillo Public Library will be joining us for an update on the library as well as discuss the online resources, upcoming events for the community, and how we can get the most out of using the library.

HAP RAPP MEMORIAL TRACK MEET
The date is Saturday, May 21, 2022, and Dave Drumright is once again in charge (thanks, Dave!). For our newer members, the Track Meet is our oldest community service event, and has been held nearly every year since 1960. In 1988, after the death of longtime club member Hap Rapp, who devoted countless hours every year helping with the meet, it was renamed in his honor. The meet is held at Adolfo Camarillo High School, and kids from all of our local elementary and middle schools are invited to compete for ribbons and trophies. We also present the Guy Craig Award (named after our club's charter president) to the school that demonstrates the best preparedness, sportsmanship and enthusiasm at the meet.
