Last week, Tim Sprinkles introduced us to Shannon Klemann, the latest recipient of our Exemplary Service Award. Shannon is a biology teacher at Adolfo Camarillo High School, and her many contributions to her school and community were glowingly described by her Principal, Matt LaBelle.
Thanks to Tim for creating and organizing this great new awards program.
Last week, Steve Krupnik, currently assigned as a Senior Deputy in the Narcotics Unit Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit and the SWAT team, gave us a scary presentation on the overdose epidemic here in our county. His unit investigates both lethal and non-lethal overdose cases, works with the District Attorney for prosecution, and helps educate the public on the dangers of new drugs such as fentanyl.
Steve discussed what causes overdoses, and how relatively easy it is to obtain illegal drugs in our community (they are even advertised fairly openly on Craigslist, he said).
7/14 Staci Brown Sadly, drunk driving is the number 1 cause of death on our roadways. Drunk and drugged driving comes with a cost - and it is one that robs us of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, spouses and friends. The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking. MADD's Program Director, Staci Brown will be educating us on the programs that MADD is involved with and what MADD does in the community.
7/21 Steve Hodel Elizabeth Short (1924–1947), known posthumously as the "Black Dahlia", was found murdered in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her case became highly publicized due to the graphic nature of the crime, which included her corpse having been mutilated and bisected at the waist. Former LAPD Homicide Detective, Steve Hodel has investigated this case for years and is a New York Times best selling author regarding this case . . . with some very interesting theories.
7/28 Nell Stevenson Bright At age 9, Nell Stevenson Bright knew she was going to be a pilot. She couldn't wait to join the Air Force Auxiliary during WWII when she saw an article that Jacqueline Cochran was interviewing women pilots to train for the Army Air Corps. Out of 25,000 applicants she was one of the 1,074 chosen. In 2010 she received her long-overdue Congressional Gold Medal and this June she celebrated her 100th birthday. Join us to hear Nell's amazing story as a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).
