TODAY'S SMILE
THIS WEEK
Sadly, drunk driving is the number one cause of death on our roadways. Drunk and drugged driving comes with a cost, and it's one that robs us of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, spouses and friends. The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking. MADD's Program Director, Staci Brown, will be educating us on the programs that MADD is involved with and what MADD does in the community.

SUMMER BBQ
Reports are that everyone had a great time at Saturday's Summer BBQ at the beautiful home of Al and Petra Lowe. Thanks to them for hosting us, and also thanks to Kevin Nunn for recording the event with photos and videos, which you can see here.
AT OUR LAST MEETING
At our last meeting, Logan Savage (a Ph.D. candidate studying behavioral neuroscience at UC Davis) told us about the National Primate Research Centers (NPRCs), a national network of dedicated teams fighting diseases from Alzheimer’s to Zika. There currently are seven centers employing more than 2,500 people, including certified veterinarians, behavioral specialists and animal technicians. Recently, NPRC researchers were on the forefront of Covid 19 research, helping to identify the structures and pathology of the viral strains as soon as they were detected in the U.S.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS
7/21  Steve Hodel
Elizabeth Short  (1924–1947), known posthumously as the "Black Dahlia", was found murdered in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her case became highly publicized due to the graphic nature of the crime, which included her corpse having been mutilated and bisected at the waist. Former LAPD Homicide Detective, Steve Hodel has investigated this case for years and is a New York Times best selling author regarding this case . . . with some very interesting theories.

7/28 Nell Stevenson Bright
At age 9, Nell Stevenson Bright knew she was going to be a pilot. She couldn't wait to join the Air Force Auxiliary during WWII when she saw an article that Jacqueline Cochran was interviewing women pilots to train for the Army Air Corps. Out of 25,000 applicants she was one of the 1,074 chosen. In 2010 she received her long-overdue Congressional Gold Medal and this June she celebrated her 100th birthday.  Join us to hear Nell's amazing story as a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).
